Between 1920 and 1925 Elsaesser held the post of Principal Director of the School of Arts and Crafts in Cologne, later known as the Kölner Werkschulen( Cologne Crafts Schools).

Van de Velde resigned as head of the School of Arts and Crafts, recommending Walter Gropius as his successor. The School of Arts and Crafts became the core of the Bauhaus (its name from 1919).
