People in Portugal have followed with great concern the recent series of pictures of emigrant families arriving in Portugal after being repatriated from Canada, in many instances including children born in Canada, who do not know Portugal and have no knowledge of Portuguese, following many years' residence in Canada and generally with only two weeks' notice.

In a first study, participants were exposed to a series of pictures used to elicit disgust. Only participants with implementation intentions were able to reduce arousal as compared to a control group. As anticipated, participants who operated under a mere goal (intention) did not manage to do so. Further, the effectiveness of implementation intentions as well as the ineffectiveness of mere goal intentions was replicated in a second study with the control of spider fear.
