Regionally consistent southeasterly slip of the hangingwall towards ultramafic rocks in the western Betics and the Rif suggests a SE-NW extensional component on the plate boundary. Extension is further attested by an Early Miocene basaltic dike-swarm (Torres-Roldan et al., 1986). The timing of extension and magmatism accords well with the tectonic evolution of the Gulf of Lion and the Balearic Basin, which opened in Oligocene to Aquitanian times. Deformation in this area spread southward with time.

Regional einheitliche südöstlicher Schlupf der Hangenden hin ultramafischem Gestein in den westlichen Diabetikern und dem Rif schlägt eine SE-NW extensional Komponente auf der Platte Grenze. Erweiterung wird weiter belegt durch einen frühen Miozän Basalt Deich-Schwarm (Torres-Roldan et al., 1986). Der Zeitpunkt der Erweiterung und Magmatismus gut mit der tektonischen Entwicklung des Golfs von Lion und dem balearischen Basin, die in Oligozän bis aquitanischen Zeiten geöffnet. Verformung in diesem Bereich verteilt Süden mit der Zeit.
