The Soviet astronomer Viktor Hambardzumyan gave the objects their name, and based on their occurrence near young stars (a few hundred thousand years old), suggested they might represent an early stage in the formation of T Tauri stars.

What they first took to be a dead animal was a human being half-submerged in the water. The police were called and only during the next few days it was established that it was not a 20th century murder but a mystery case with a body several thousand years old.
