to miss the point

By trying to imitate the look of Pollock’s flowing paint, and to subjugate himself to the work of another artist, Mosettig has ironically emphasized the consistently ravishing beauty of his own pencil marks on paper, along with the habitual diagonal hatchmarks of his own hand. Pollock is just the jumping-off point, not the goal. Mosettig’s laborious process elevates drawing — usually considered a preliminary or preparatory medium — into something every bit as ambitious as a large, museum-scale painting. The one commonality between Pollock and Mosettig is that the latter’s drawings possess a uniform energy across the entire surface of an image. To view them as copies, however, is to miss the point. Mosettig’s drawings ultimately can’t reproduce Pollock’s paintings — but by failing at precise translation, they invent a beautiful new language all their own. 

Durch den Versuch zu imitieren das Aussehen von fließender Farbe Pollocks, und sich auf die Arbeit eines anderen Künstlers zu unterwerfen, hat Mosettig ironisch die gleichbleibend hinreißenden Schönheit seines eigenen Bleistiftstriche auf Papier betonte, zusammen mit den gewöhnlichen diagonal hatchmarks seiner eigenen Hand. Pollock ist nur der Startpunkt, nicht das Ziel. Mosettig den mühsamen Prozess erhebt zeichnen - in der Regel als eine vorbereitende Medium - in etwas genauso ehrgeizig wie eine große, Museum angelegte Malerei. Die eine Gemeinsamkeit zwischen Pollock und Mosettig ist, dass dessen Zeichnungen eine einheitliche Energie besitzen über die gesamte Fläche des Bildes. Um sie als Kopien zu sehen, ist jedoch an der Sache vorbei. Mosettig Zeichnungen letztendlich nicht reproduzieren kann Pollocks Gemälden - aber indem sie nicht auf präzise Übersetzungen, erfinden sie eine schöne neue ganz eigene Sprache. Â
