IV The crown. The tricky part! The crown of the hat also has a lot of control over what the end result looks like, so it’s good to know about how high and how wide you want the top to be at this point. If you want a tophat look, make a circle on the fabric the same size and shape as the first one that started the brim out. If you want a slightly tapered top like a bowler, make it 1/4 to 1/2 of an inch smaller. If you want a bonnet, make it 3/4 of an inch or more smaller. The taller the top is, the less it will taper, so for a short hat you’ll want to keep the size close to the measurement of your head. Draw another line, slightly bigger (1/4 to 1/2 inch again), around the outside of the top measurement. Cut along this outside line.
