One discussion of terrorism remarks that no one would attempt a ‘microspecific pathological approach’ to the question of why a particular individual would be driven to terrorism (Farish 2002: 158). Much of the work on Southeast Asia, however, leads in this direction. Looking at terrorism as a deviant phenomenon to be explained may owe something to the efforts of some convicted terrorists to justify their acts in religious terms. Deviant religious teaching and individual susceptibility thus appear as factors behind terrorism. The problem with focusing on religious brainwashing as the source of militancy or terrorism, however, is not that such indoctrination never occurs – it almost certainly does – but that this focus makes it almost impossible to take seriously the values and grievances of the supposedly brainwashed. From such a perspective, it is all too easy to confound extreme anger or uncongenial goals with acts of terrorism.

 Militanz oder Terrorismus, entspringt jedoch nicht, dass solche Indoktrination
 nie auftritt – dies sicherlich der Fall ist –, sondern dass diese Fokussierung macht es fast
 unmöglich, die Werte und Beschwerden ernst zu nehmen die angeblich
 einer Gehirnwäsche unterzogen. Aus dieser Sicht ist es allzu leicht, extrem zu verwirren
 Wut oder andersartigen Ziele mit Terrorakten.
