The first of these events was the Miocene-rifting phase, during which the continental crust underwent massive thinning and created the 361100N high and the B/O Vizconde de Eza Bank. Concurrent with this rifting was the Miocene volcanism that was responsible for the formation of the seamounts scattered over the surface of the basin and the Albora´n Ridge.

The active tectonic setting of the Alboran Basin is characterized by a variety of structures, of which the most important are the strikeslip fault systems. It has been proposed that strike-slip faulting was active since at least late Tortonian times during which the Alboran Basin was broken into sub-basins divided by transverse volcanic ridges. Active volcanism was coeval with the strike-slip tectonism as evidenced by the ages obtained in samples of shoshonitic lavas (4.5–9 Ma.) and alkali basalts (1.5–6 Ma).

Seismic images (Fig. 17 on back-pocket foldout, this volume) and the age of sediments at Site 979 confirms that later uplifting of the Alboran Ridge occurred from the late Pliocene to the Holocene. The high sedimentation rate at this site indicates that uplifting was coeval with active subsidence. No significant volcanic or volcaniclastic material was sampled at Site 979, evidencing that late Pliocene-to-Pleistocene uplift of the Ridge was not accompanied by nearby volcanic activity. This implies that volcanism at the Alboran Ridge was not active at these times.

Seismische Bilder (Abb. 17 auf Gesäßtasche ausklappbar, in diesem Band) und das Alter der Sedimente an Standort 979 bestätigt, dass spätere Hebung der Alboran Ridge trat aus dem späten Pliozän bis zum Holozän.
