She studied biology at the University of Heidelberg (Germany) with minors in chemistry and physics until she received her Vordiplom. Subsequently she spent a year at the University of Washington in Seattle (USA) where she took courses in microbiology, ecology, sociobiology, and marine conservation.

Sie studierte Biologie mit Chemie und Physik im Nebenfach bis zum Vordiplom an der Universität Heidelberg. Im Anschluss verbrachte sie ein Jahr an der Universität Washington in Seattle (USA) wo sie Kurse in Mikrobiologie, Ökologie, Soziobiologie und marinem Umweltschutz belegte.
