Braunpelikan

Die Insel Alcatraz (aus dem Spanischen für Braunpelikan) liegt mitten in der Bucht von San Francisco, Kalifornien in den USA. Sie wurde früher als Standort für ein befestigtes Fort und danach als Hochsicherheitsgefängnis genutzt, dient aber inzwischen lediglich als Touristenattraktion. Alcatraz steht unter der Aufsicht des US National Park Service. Die 500 Meter lange und bis zu 41 Meter hohe Sandsteininsel diente nicht nur als Standort für ein Gefängnis. Auf der 85.000 m² großen Insel befindet sich auch der älteste Leuchtturm der US-amerikanischen Westküste.

You used to be a location for a fortified fort and then as a high security prison, but now serves only as a tourist attraction. Alcatraz is under the supervision of the U.S. National Park Service. The 500 meters long and up to 41 meter high sandstone island served not only as the site of a prison. On the 85,000 square meter island is also the oldest lighthouse in the U.S. west coast.
