Das Land entschied sich 1901 gegen einen Beitritt zum Commonwealth of Australia und blieb bis 1907 eine Kolonie, als Neuseeland den Status einer Dominion erhielt und folglich fast unabhängig von Großbritannien wurde. The country decided in 1901 not to join the Commonwealth of Australia until 1907 and remained a colony when New Zealand was awarded the status of a Dominion, and thus nearly independent of Great Britain. Throughout the entire colonial period to the recent present across the country proved to be particularly loyal ally of Britain. Sun New Zealand troops deployed for the Second Boer War, the First and Second World War and the Suez crisis.
