Drei Staaten - Albanien, die Cook-Inseln und Ruanda - schafften 2007 die Todesstrafe komplett ab. Kirgisien strich diese Strafe aus dem gewöhnlichen Strafrecht. In den USA schloss sich mit New Jersey zum ersten Mal seit der Wiederzulassung der Todesstrafe in den USA im Jahre 1972 ein Bundesstaat dem Trend gegen die Todesstrafe an und schaffte sie ab.
