== Freibeuterei ==Turgut wurde vermutlich 1485 auf der kleinasiatischen Halbinsel von Bodrum in eine arme Familie geboren; heute steht dort das nach ihm benannte Städtchen Turgutreis.

He was born in the sub-district called Saravalos in the western tip of Bodrum peninsula (which is called Turgutreis in his honour today) and most probably in the Karaba? village on the Aegean coast of Asia Minor.

Die Türken marschierten während des 16. Jahrhundert ein und eroberten fast alle Gebiete Griechenlands. Kimolos war keine Ausnahme, aber die Freibeuterei verlief weiter und fast alle Einwohner Verliesen die Insel während des 18. Jahrhunderts.

The Turks arrived in the 16th century, and invaded and conquered most of Greece. Kimolos was no exception, but the piracy on the island continued, and almost all the islanders left in the 18th century.

In one of McCarthy’s most comprehensive works in progress of recent years he looks at the subject of “piracy” as an anarchist counter-model to the expansionist power structures of the 17th- and 18th-century colonial powers. Here McCarthy also alludes to contemporary politics with its gestures of occupation and control.
