1450 leiht der Mainzer Advokat Johannes Fust Gutenberg zunächst eine Summe von 800 Gulden für seine kostspieliges Projekt, das neben dem Aufbau einer Druckerwerkstatt auch für die Einstellung von Gehilfen eine hohe Geldsumme fordert. Bereits im Jahre 1452 beteiligt sich Fust mit einer weiteren Zahlung von 800 Gulden als Teilhaber an dem gemeinschaftlichen Unternehmen, oder, wie es in den Quellen heißt, dem Werk der Bücher. Ebenfalls 1452 wird eine 42-zeiligen Bibel in lateinischer Sprache gedruckt. Dieser Bibel hatte eine Auflage von ca. 180 Stück, davon ca. 30 auf Pergament.

1450 the Mainz lawyer John Fust lent Gutenberg initially a sum of 800 guilders for his expensive project that requires only the establishment of a printing workshop and for the hiring of assistants a large sum of money. Already in 1452, Fust is involved with a further payment of 800 guilders as a partner in the joint enterprise, or, as in the sources say, the work of the books. Also in 1452, a 42-line Bible is printed in Latin. This Bible had a circulation of about 180 pieces, of which about 30 on vellum.
