Selective observation and selective memory are important factors in leading people to attribute any improvement in their symptoms to the treatment, even when the healer is a quack. Last: the treatments given by the homeopaths in fact amounted to doing nothing, and as such they were probably better than what the ordinary physicians of the day were in the habit of inflicting on their patients: bloodletting, administering emetics and purgatives, producing artificial sores and prescribing various herbal mixtures.
