Oktober 2008 entdeckte man das die 57-jährige Kenianerin illegal in einer Sozialwohung in den USA lebt und von sozialen Programmen und den Steuern lebt. Eine Verweigerung die USA zu verlassen bedeutet in Amerika ein Verstoß gegen das US-Einwanderungsgesetz. Obama nennt seine Tante auch in seinem geschriebenen Buch.
