Während die schwere Form des Milchfiebers ab der 2. Phase – im Durchschnitt erkranken 8 – 10% – leicht zu erkennen ist und dementsprechend behandelt wird, werden die negativen Folgen des leichten (subklinischen) Calciummangels – bei ca. 30% der Kühe - oft unterschätzt. Die Tiere fressen schlechter, die negative Energie- und Proteinbilanz wird verstärkt. Die Kühe kommen nicht richtig in Schwung. Außerdem ergeben sich durch die allgemeine Beeinträchtigung der Muskulatur Probleme am Euter (Mastitis durch ungenügenden Zitzenverschluss) und im Magen-Darm-Trakt. Die Beeinträchtigung der Kontraktilität der Gebärmuttermuskulatur führt zu Wehenschwäche mit diversen Folgeerscheinungen (siehe Abb. 3).
