Wenn das Kirchenjahr im Herbst abschließt, beginnt mit dem neuen Kirchenjahr am 25. November zugleich schon die Vorbereitung auf Weihnachten, die Adventszeit. Advent kommt aus dem Lateinischen und bedeutet, dass nun die Zeit der Ankunft des Herrn naht. Eine besondere Bedeutung kommt im Advent dem Adventkranz zu. Bereits in vorchristlicher Zeit spielten Kränze eine große Rolle. Grüne Kränze und Strohkränze, so glaubte man, brächten Segen und wehrten Unheil ab. Vor allem jenes Unheil, das die Ernte stören könnte.
