Die Langobarden liebten San Michele, und da sie Anhänger des Arianismus waren, wurden sie von den Katholiken als Heiden bezeichnet.

The Longobards loved San Michele and being arianism followers they were considered pagans by the catholics.

Das erste Dokument in dem die Stadt Amalfi erwähnt wird, ist ein Brief von 596 n. Chr., den Papst Gregor der Grobe an Bischof Pimenio geschrieben hat. Amalfi war seit seinen Anfangen der auberste südliche Ausläufer des byzantinischen Herzogtums von Neapel, die Stadt war in dauerndem Kampf mit den Langobarden von Benevent und später dann auch mit jenen von Salerno. Die Langobarden versuchten mehrmals, im Laufe des 8. und 9. Jahrhundert, die Stadt zu erobern und es gelang ihnen schließlich sie im Jahre 838 einzunehmen, nachdem einige amalfitanische Familien ihre Vaterstadt verraten hatten.

A letter dated 596 A.D. which Pope Gregory the Great addressed to Bishop Pimenius is the first historically indisputable proof of the existence of the city of Amalfi . From the very beginning it had been the southern-most outpost of the Byzantine Duchy of Naples and was in continual opposition first to the Lombards from Benevento and then to the Lombards from Salerno. Indeed the Lombards made several attempts to take control of the city between the 8th and 9th centuries before finally conquering it in 838 , thanks to the betrayal of the rules of the city by certain Amalfi families.

Die eigentliche Gründung von Moliterno geht auf die kontinuierlichen Auseinandersetzungen zwischen Langobarden und Sarazenen zu Anfang des IX Jahrhunderts zurück.
