Die vielen weiteren roten Punkte sind Legionellen, die sich in der Wirtszelle vermehren und diese dabei von innen her auffressen. Ist die Amöbe dann gewissermaßen verbraucht, platzt sie z. B. im oberen Bereich auf und die darin enthaltenen Legionellen werden dabei hauptsächlich im Warmwasserkreislauf so verbreitet, dass sie zu der oft tödlich verlaufenden Legionärskrankheit führen. Einzelne dieser Legionellen suchen sich auf dem Weg durch das Rohrsystem z. B. im Biofilm eine Bleibe oder sie dringen wieder in eine andere Amöbe ein und der beschriebene Prozess wiederholt sich oft mit katastrophaler Geschwindigkeit.
