Im Norden und Osten hat die Tieflandregion Anteil an den als Llanos (Feuchtsavannen) bezeichneten Ebenen des Orinoco. Der Hauptfluss Kolumbiens, der Río Magdalena, fließt zwischen der Ost- und der Zentralkordillere quer durch das ganze Land und mündet nach rund 1540Kilometern im Norden bei Barranquilla ins Karibische Meer.

The principal river of Colombia, the Magdalena, flows north between the Cordillera Oriental and the Cordillera Central. Crossing practically the entire country, it empties into the Caribbean Sea near Barranquilla after a course of about 1,540 km (about 957 mi).
