He was the founder of the Yamashina Institute for Ornithology.

Die Ornithologie zählt zu seinen ältesten, familienbedingten Hobbys. Bedingt durch diese Leidenschaft schrieb er seine Diplomarbeit über die Verbreitung des Halsbandsittichs im Rheinland und gehört bis heute zu einer Gruppe von Vogelforschern, die Halsbandsittiche zu wissenschaftlichen Zwecken fangen und beringen.

He studied Geography,Biology and Soil Sciences at the universities of Düsseldorf and Bonn. Ornithology is one of his oldest hobbies, as it runs in his family.Thanks to his passion for it, he chose the spread of the rose-ringed parakeet in the Rhineland as his final-year project and is tothis day a member of a group of birdwatchers who catch and ring the rose-ringed parakeets for scientific purposes.

Mit "Analyse d'une nouvelle ornithologie élémentaire" (1816) entwickelte er die heute noch teils angewandte ornithologische Systematisierung, die er in weiteren Beiträgen im "Nouveau Dictionnaire d'Histoire Naturelle" (1816–1819) weiter fortsetzte und ausbaute.

Vieillot's "Analyse d'une nouvelle Ornithologie Elémentaire" (1816) set out a new system of ornithological classification, which he applied with slight modifications in his contributions to the "Nouveau Dictionaire d'Histoire Naturelle" (1816–19).
