Warum Fasten? Bedingt durch ein ständiges Überangebot an Nahrungsmitteln in der westlichen Gesellschaft können Fastenkuren als Regulativ genutzt werden um den Körper zu reinigen und zu entschlacken. Daher besteht der Beginn einer Fastenkur in einer gründlichen Darmentleerung und -reinigung, die durch das Abführen mittels Glauber- oder Bittersalz und/oder in der Anwendung durch Einläufe gewährleistet wird. Zentraler Bestandteil der Ernährung während des Fastens ist eine ausreichende Flüssigkeitszufuhr durch Wasser und ungesüßte Tees. Je nach gewählter Fastenmethode besteht die Kost aus ausschließlich flüssigen oder auch festen Nahrungsmitteln. Die stark begrenzte Kalorienzufuhr während der Fastenzeit (z.B. täglich maximal 195 kcal bei der Methode nach Buchinger) führt zu einer Gewichtsreduktion und zum Abbau von Fettdepots.
