Säkularisation

Die Besiedlung der Gegend um Hainstadt kann auf eine lange Geschichte zurückblicken. Ende der sechziger Jahre fand man in Hainstadt die Überreste des römischen Kastells Hainstadt. Der heutige Ort geht aber wohl eher aus einer fränkischen Siedlung hervor. Die erste urkundliche Erwähnung stammt aus dem Jahre 801 in einem Schriftstück des Klosters Fulda. 1287 wird der Ort Henystad und in den folgenden Jahren Heinstad bzw. Heinstat (1371) genannt. Hainstadt gehörte den Herren von Heyenhausen und von Hausen, danach dem Grafen Gottfried von Eppstein. Dieser verkaufte es 1425 mit dem Amt Steinheim an den Mainzer Erzbischof. 1569 wird der Ort erstmals als Hainstadt bezeichnet. Im Zuge der Säkularisation nach dem Reichsdeputationshauptschluss fiel Hainstadt dann 1803 an Hessen-Darmstadt.
