In dieser Stadt gibt es drei Schönheitssalons.

In this city, there are three beauty salons.

Ausgehend von ethnographischer Feldforschung in Istanbul, insbesondere von teilnehmender Beobachtung in ausgewählten Schönheitssalons und –kliniken in vier unterschiedlichen Stadtvierteln und „körperzentrierten“ biograpisch-narrativen Interviews fragt das Forschungsvorhaben nach der kulturellen Bedeutung und sozialen Einbettung von ästhetischen Körpermodifikationen und Weiblichkeit in einem komplexen städtischen Raum. Die Untersuchung kulturell konnotierter, vergeschlechtlichter Körperpraktiken in ihrer städtischen Diversität tritt der These einer zunehmenden Standardisierung von Schönheitsbildern und -normen im Zuge der Globalisierung entgegen. Veränderte Praktiken der Körpermodifikation werden hierbei nicht einfach als eine zunehmende Kommodifizierung einzelner Körper begriffen, sondern als Ausdruck von Transformationsprozessen gesellschaftlicher Teilhabe und Subjektivität.

Based on ethnographic fieldwork in Istanbul, in particular participant observation in selected beauty salons and clinics in four different neighborhoods and "body-centered" biograpisch-narrative interviews asks the research project on the cultural significance and social embeddedness of aesthetic body modifications and femininity in a complex urban environment. The investigation cultural connotations, gendered body practices in its urban diversity challenges the thesis of an increasing standardization of beauty images and standards in the context of globalization. Changing practices of body modification are not here simply understood as an increasing commodification of individual body, but as an expression of transformation processes of social participation and subjectivity.
