Sextant

Das kstars;-Symbol ist ein Sextant, ein Handteleskop, das für die Navigation auf Segelschiffen benutzt wurde, als die Sterne noch wichtig für die Navigation waren. Indem er vorsichtig die Positionen der Sterne beobachtete, konnte der Steuermann ziemlich genauen Werte für Breiten-und Längengrad der Schiffsposition bekommen.

The kstars; Icon is a sextant, a handheld telescope which was used by navigators on sailing ships back when the stars were important for navigation. By carefully reckoning the positions of the stars, the navigator could get an accurate estimate of the ship's current longitude and latitude.

Um 1730 erfanden John Hadley, ein englischer Astronom und Mathematiker und Thomas Godfrey, Optiker und Erfinder in den britischen Kolonien in Amerika, unabhägig voneinander den ersten Sextant und reichten ihre Entwürfe an die Royal Society ein. Hadleys Konstruktion war ein Oktant, dieser erwies sich als zweckmäßiger und wurde der Vorläufer aller weiteren Sextanten.

In order to 1730 John Hadley, an English astronom and mathematician and Thomas Godfrey, an optician and inventor in the British colony of America, invented independently, the first sextant and turned in their sketches to the Royal Society. The construction of Hadley was an octant, this proved as more useful and was the precursor of all further sextants.
