Geplant wurde die Brooklyn Bridge von dem deutsch-amerikanischen Ingenieur John August Roebling. Kurz nach Beginn der Arbeiten an der Brooklyn Bridge wurde Roebling bei Vermessungsarbeiten jedoch Opfer eines Unfalls . Er starb nur drei Wochen später an Tetanus. Sein Sohn übernahm daraufhin die Leitung des Projektes, nach einem Unfall war er allerdings an den Rollstuhl gebunden. Zuletzt leitete seine Frau das Projekt. Sie war auch die erste Person die die Brücke überquerte.
