Die Band – damals noch als Quartett mit Nanna, Raggi, Brynjar und Arnar – gewann 2010 den nationalen Bandwettbewerb Músiktilraunir. Nach dem Wettbewerb kamen Árni und Kristján als weitere Bandmitglieder hinzu. Bei ihren Auftritten werden sie zudem meist von der Trompeterin Ragnhildur unterstützt. Im Oktober 2011 traten Of Monsters and Men während des Musikfestivals Iceland Airwaves u.a. im neuen Reykjavíker Konzerthaus Harpa auf. Mit dem Titel Little Talks hielt sich die Band 2011 mehrere Wochen auf Platz 1 der isländischen Single-Charts. Ihr Debütalbum My Head Is an Animal erschien im September 2011 in Island und wurde im April 2012 auch auf dem amerikanischen Markt veröffentlicht, wo es mit Platz sechs in den Billboard 200 den bis dahin höchsten Rang einer isländischen Band bzw. Künstlers erreichte. Im März 2012 begann Of Monsters and Men eine erste Nordamerika-Tour. In Deutschland traten sie erstmals Ende April 2012 in Köln und Berlin auf.

The band - at that time as a Quartet with Nanna, raggi, Brynjar and Arnar - won national band competition Músiktilraunir in 2010. After the competition, Árni and Kristján as other band members were added. They are supported mostly by the female trumpeter Ragnhildur during their performances. In October 2011 Harpa occurred of monsters and men during the Iceland airwaves Music Festival among others in the new Icelandic Concert Hall.
 
 Titled little talks, the band held 2011 several weeks at number one of the Icelandic singles chart. Her debut album, My Head is an animal was released in September 2011 in Iceland and was published in the April 2012 on the American market, where it reached the previously highest rank of an Icelandic band or artist with a sixth on the Billboard 200. 
 In March 2012, a first tour of North America began of monsters and men. In Germany, they performed for the first time at the end April 2012 in Cologne and Berlin.
