A lubricating composition comprising a major amount of an oil of lubricating viscosity, (A) at least one organic polysulfide which is a mixture comprising at least 90 % dihydrocarbyl trisulfide, from 0.1 % up to 8 % dihydrocarbyl disulfide, and less than 5 % dihydrocarbyl higher polysulfides obtainable by reacting an olefin having from 2 to 30 carbon atoms, sulfur, and hydrogen sulfide to form an intermediate, which is then fractionally distilled and (B) at least one overbased metal composition or a phosphorus or boron compound, or mixtures thereof.

428 g of a methyl pentenoate/methyl valerate mixture (80% of pentenoic esters comprising 25% of methyl 4-trans-pentenoate, 70% of methyl 3-trans-pentenoate and 5% of methyl 2-trans-pentenoate/20% of valeric ester) were obtained, the yield of pentenoic esters being 60% of theory and that of valeric ester being 15% of theory.
