Der Ortsname, der mit "bei den Leuten am Forst" zu erklären ist, wird durch die Bäume heraldisch illustriert. Im Hinblick auf die damals in der Gemeinde ansässige Großindustrie wurde schließlich als Beizeichen ein Zahnrad in das Gemeindewappen aufgenommen. Zahn- und Kammräder sind als allgemein gültige Industriesymbole schon längst in den heraldischen Formenschatz übergegangen.
