In der Nachkriegszeit brachte Benedetto Croce in Erinnerung, dass das monarchische Europa- das Europa der skandinavischen Monarchien, der britischen, der niederländischen und der belgischen Monarchie, wenn wir so wollen- als einziges den verschiedenen Nationalismen, d. h. dem Nationalsozialismus, den verschiedenen Formen des Sozialismus und dem Kommunismus, widerstanden hat, um einen Schimmer der Hoffnung auf Freiheit zu wahren.
