Bevor der Central Park angelegt wurde, befand sich an der selben Stelle der sogenannte Jones Wood. Dieser war ein weniger schöner, ungepflegter und sumpfiger Wald, welcher von ca 1500 Einwanderern bewohnt war. 1851 wurde der Stadt New York erlaubt das Gebiet zu kaufen. Im Jahre 1873 wurde der Central Park als Erholungs- und Freizeitgebiet für die New Yorker Bevölkerung angelegt.
