In großem Umfange werden mehr oder weniger stark thixotrop eingedickte wasserbasierte Hilfsflüssigkeiten im Rahmen der Technologie geologischer und anderer Bohrungen im Erdreich, aber auch in anderem Zusammenhang, z. B. als Erdreichstütze bei Ausschachtungen, insbesondere im Schlitzwandbau, Schacht-, Brunnen- und Senkkasten-Absenkungen, bei Rohrdurchpressungen und dergleichen, verwendet.
