Detektor zur Feststellung eines Fluids in einer vorbestimmten Zone und mit einem elektrischen Kabel (16; 206, 210), das dazu geeignet ist, in der vorbestimmten Zone angeordnet zu werden, Mitteln (142) zum Anlegen von Impulsen an das Kabel und mit dem Kabel verbundenen Mitteln (160 etc.) zum Empfangen von Reflexionen der Impulse aus dem Kabel, wobei der Detektor gekennzeichnet ist durch: Mittel (160) zum Probenentnehmen aus den genannten Reflexionen, wobei diese Probenentnahmemittel wirksam sind, um eine oder, im Vergleich zur Gesamtzahl der zu entnehmenden Proben, wenige Proben einer Reflexion im Anschluß an die Aufgabe eines jeden Impulses auf das Kabel (16; 206, 210) zu entnehmen, und diese jedesmal entnommene Probe bzw. Proben um einen anderen Betrag gegenüber dem letzten aufgegebenen Impuls zeitverschoben wird und einem anderen Abschnitt bzw. anderen Abschnitten der Reflexion entspricht, Mittel (164) zum Speichern dieser Proben, um eine gespeicherte Darstellung einer Reflexion zu erhalten, mit den Probenentnahmemitteln (160) verbundene Mittel (164) zum Vergleichen von Proben nachfolgender Reflexionen mit den gespeicherten Proben und Liefern einer Anzeige für die Anwesenheit eines Fluids, wenn Proben nachfolgender Reflexionen von den gespeicherten Proben um einen vorbestimmten Betrag abweichen, und Mittel (164) zum Speichern von Proben einer nachfolgenden Reflexion, wenn diese Proben von den vorausgehend gespeicherten Proben um einen vorbestimmten Betrag abweichen, um so eine Nach-Leck-Wellenform für einen nachfolgenden Vergleich und eine nachfolgende Anzeige zu definieren.

A detector for detecting fluid in a predetermined area and having an electrical cable (16; 206, 210) adapted to be disposed in said predetermined area, means (142) for applying pulses to said cable, and means (160 etc.) coupled to said cable for receiving reflections of said pulses from said cable, said detector being characterized by: means (160) for sampling said reflections, said sampling means being operative to take one or a few samples, as compared to the total number of samples to be taken, of one reflection subsequent to the application of each pulse to said cable (16; 206, 210), said sample or, respectively, samples taken each time being shifted in time by a different amount with respect to the last applied pulse and corresponding to a different portion or, respectively, different portions of the reflection; means (164) for storing said samples to provide a stored representation of a reflection; means (164) coupled to said sampling means (160) for comparing samples of subsequent reflections with said stored samples and providing an indication of the presence of a fluid if samples of subsequent reflections differ from said stored samples by a predetermined amount; and means (164) for storing samples of a subsequent reflection once said latter samples differ from said previously stored samples by a predetermined amount, thus to define a post-leak waveform for subsequent comparison and indication.
