Das ist unsere Position, und ich denke, daß wir, wenn wir das weiter verfolgen, sehen werden -und ich bin ganz sicher, daß das so sein wird -, daß dieser Universaldienst eigentlich zu einem kleinen Problem zusammenschrumpft.

Jahrhunderts wurde Glauben durch Fanatismus ersetzt, der überall zu einigen wenigen handfesten Worten oder Losungen zusammenschrumpft, die wir in Tschechien bis zur Neige auskosten durften: Zuerst "Heil Hitler" und "Sieg Heil" , dann "Hoch die Arbeit" und "Es lebe die Kommunistische Partei".

(And if a Christian, when attempting to discuss faith and as an answer to a question about the roots and principles of his faith, does not know another answer but “Hallelujah, Jesus loves you”, then he should not be surprised if the answer he will hear is for instance “Allah akbar” (God is Great) accompanied by a blow with a kinjal in the head, despite the fact that both participants in the discussion might have wished to discuss the same topic, i.e. faith and God. But – in our 20th century world faith has been replaced by fanaticism which reduced itself into several sentences or sayings, which we have experienced enough of in Bohemia: First of all it was “Heil Hitler” and “Sieg Heil” and later “Honour to Work” and “Long Life to the Communist Part of Czechoslovakia”.

All of the thought-about remains a mere shadow, which shrivels up into a dark point beyond the realm of the thinking.

Daneben vollzieht sich noch ein anderer Prozeß: Die kapitalistische Produktion bemächtigt sich Schritt für Schritt der Gewerbe, die bei der landwirtschaftlichen Bevölkerung eine Nebenbeschäftigung waren, sie entzieht dem Bauerntum auf diese Weise eine Erwerbsquelle nach der anderen, wodurch auch die Kaufkraft der ländlichen Bevölkerung gegenüber den Erzeugnissen der Industrie immer mehr zurückgeht, so daß der innere Markt auch von dieser Seite immer mehr zusammenschrumpft.

At the same time, there is a further change: capitalist production gradually takes over even the trades which provided additional employment to an agricultural people; thus it deprives the peasants of their resources by degrees, so that the rural population can afford to buy fewer and fewer industrial products. This is a further reason for the continual contraction of the home market. As for the capitalist class, we see that this latter is also unable to realise the entire newly created product, though for the opposite reason.

Die Arbeit soll die enge Beziehung der gegenüberliegenden Küsten des Nordatlantiks unterstreichen, indem sie den Ozean quasi zusammenschrumpft und dem Betrachter die Möglichkeit eröffnet, von einer Seite zu anderen zu blicken und dann ? mit ein paar Schritten zum anderen Monitor ? den Atlantik zu überqueren und zur anderen Seite zurück zu schauen, wo er eben noch stand.

The work aims to underline the close relation of the opposite shores of the North Atlantic by shrinking the ocean and enabling the viewer to look from one side across to the other, then cross it by a few steps to the other monitor and look back across again.

Die Arbeit soll die enge Beziehung der gegenüberliegenden Küsten des Nordatlantiks unterstreichen, indem sie den Ozean quasi zusammenschrumpft und dem Betrachter die Möglichkeit eröffnet, von einer Seite zu anderen zu blicken und dann ? mit wenigen Schritten vor die rückwärtige Leinwand ? den Atlantik zu überqueren und zur anderen Seite zurück zu schauen, wo er eben noch stand.

Die Art der Darstellung hat fast comichafte Züge, in denen jedes Land bis zur Unkenntlichkeit zusammenschrumpft.

The type of portrayal has almost comic-like features, as each country shrinks to the point where it is beyond recognition.

Hierfür konstruiert er sich als notwendige Voraussetzung eine Zersplitterung des Eigentumsrechts in ein „Obereigentum“, das er der „Gesellschaft“ zuweist und das er immer mehr ausdehnt wissen will, und ein Nutznießrecht, das in den Händen des Kapitalisten immer mehr zur bloßen Verwaltung seines Betriebes zusammenschrumpft.

With this in mind, he divides the right to property into (1) the right of “sovereignty” (ownership) – which he attributes to a thing called “society” and which he wants to extend – and (2) its opposite, the simple right of use, held by the capitalist, but which is supposedly being reduced in the hands of the capitalists to the mere administration of their enterprises.
