This goes in a different way for the two other modes of democratisation, which I believe I can identify, that is, a) democratisation as the development of civil conflict (in the Machiavellian sense), between the two apparently incompatible poles – both however in reality being forms of political practice e.g. division, choice, ‘party-ism’ – of ‘social war’ and of mere constitutional ‘pluralism’; and b) democratisation as the self-government of citizens (between the pole of ‘participating’ institutions, which can become a cooptation, an instrumentalisation of active citizenship, and ‘communism’ or of the autonomy that can also become acosmism or anarchism, that is an exit from the common society).

In der Wirklichkeit bildeten sie immer Formen politischer Praxis, etwa in Gestalt von Spaltungen, politischen Wahlen oder Parteibildungen. b) Die Demokratisierung als Selbstverwaltung durch die Bürger_innen (zwischen dem Extrem der »partizipativen« Institutionen, die zur Kooptierung und Instrumentalisierung der aktiven Bürger_innen führen, und dem Extrem »Kommunismus« oder der Autonomie, die gleichermaßen zu A-Kosmismus oder Anarchismus, anders gesagt, zum Austritt aus der Gesellschaft führen können). Ich glaube nicht, dass diese Formen jemals isoliert in die Praxis umgesetzt wurden, da es soziale Konflikte, auch gewaltsame Kämpfe, waren, die breitere, reelle oder substanzielle Repräsentationsformen durchgesetzt haben.
