Description of the condition Overweight and obesity are terms used to describe an excess of adiposity (or fatness) above the ideal for good health. Current expert opinion supports the use of body mass index (BMI) cutoff points to determineweight status (as healthyweight, overweight or obese) for children and adolescents and several standard BMI cutoffs have been developed (Cole 2000;Cole 2007; deOnis 2004; de Onis 2007). Despite this, there is no consistent application of this methodology by experts and a variety of percentile based methods are also used, which can make it difficult to compare studies that have used different measures and weight outcomes.

Measures of adiposity include direct measures and proxymeasures and each measure has limitations. The most direct method of adiposity used in the included studies was DEXA (Dual Energy Xray Absorptiometry). (Mei 2002) This method is highly sensitive, precise and accurate and allows the determination of the amount of fat mass and fat-freemass, as well as the distribution of the fatness. The method, however, is expensive and requires participants to attend a clinic-type setting for the DEXA scan, therefore, this method is often not feasible for trials or routine measurement.

Maßnahmen der Adipositas sind direkte Maßnahmen und proxymeasures und jede Maßnahme hat Grenzen. Die direkteste Methode der Adipositas in den eingeschlossenen Studien verwendet wurde DEXA (Dual Energy Xray Absorptiometry). (Mei 2002) Diese Methode ist sehr empfindlich, genau und präzise und erlaubt die Bestimmung der Menge an Fett und Fett-Masse freemass sowie die Verteilung der Fettheit. Die Methode ist jedoch teuer und erfordert die Teilnehmer eine Klinik-Typ-Einstellung für die DEXA-Scan, daher ist diese Methode oft nicht machbar für Versuche oder Routine-Messung teilnehmen.
