The first European edition of Frances Trollope's powerful anti-slavery novel. From Baudry's Collection of Ancient and Modern British Authors. Published in the same year as the London first edition. With the armorial bookplate of William Philips to the front pastedown. This powerful anti-slavery novel Jonathan Jefferson Whitlaw (1836) preceded Uncle Tom's Cabin by more than fifteen years -ODNB. Frances Trollope, 1779-1863, was an English travel writer and novelist, whose literary reputation was marred by her son, Anthony Trollope, and has only recently recovered. The much-loved Trollopian world of the cathedral close, middle-class mores and strong-minded women was, in part, a family legacy passed from mother to son -ODNB. Condition: In a half calf and marbled paper binding. Externally, rubbed. The rear joint is starting, with evidence of some past worming. The front hinge is strained. Internally, firmly bound,with foxing. There istop corner marginal tidemark to the first twenty leaves.

A photograph taken of it in 1909, along with the armorial stone itself, are today kept in the Town Museum, where they may be seen.

Der Reichsadler befand sich an der Stadtmauer am oberen Tor, ein Foto, 1909 aufgenommen, ist ebenso wie der Wappenstein, der heute im Stadtmuseum zu sehen ist, erhalten.

Origin/meaning: When the borough of Birmingham was incorporated in 1838 it adopted the armorial bearings of the de Bermingham family as its seal. In 1899, when Birmingham was granted city status, it gained the right to add supporters to the shield. Minor adjustments were made in 1936. A new Coat of Arms was adopted in 1976. To the old arms a bishops mitre was added in the center of the shield and the Tudor Rose on the mural crown.

Herkunft / Bedeutung: Wenn die Gemeinde von Birmingham im Jahr 1838 aufgenommen wurde nahm er die Wappen der de Bermingham Familie als seine Dichtung. In 1899, als Birmingham Stadt-Status gewährt wurde, gewann sie das Recht vor, Unterstützer des Schildes hinzuzufügen. Kleinere Anpassungen wurden im Jahr 1936 gemacht. Ein neues Wappen wurde 1976 angenommen. Um den alten Armen ein Bischöfe Gehrung in der Mitte des Schirms und der Tudor aufgenommen Rose auf dem Mauerkrone.
