Mr President, even if it is a compromise, this resolution on Cyprus is worthwhile since on the one hand it condemns the blocking of negotiations, attributable to the Turkish Cypriots, and the new attempts at intimidation by Turkey, and, on the other hand, it reiterates Europe 's desire to undertake from the start of 1998 negotiations on membership with the single recognized government, that of the Republic of Cyprus.

Herr Präsident, selbst wenn sie einen Kompromiß darstellt, ist die Entschließung zu Zypern interessant, da sie einerseits die Verhandlungsblockade, die den türkischen Zyprioten anzulasten ist, sowie die neuen Einschüchterungsmanöver der Türkei verurteilt, andrerseits jedoch auf die Absicht der Europäischen Union -wie man sagt -hinweist, schon Anfang 1998 mit Beitrittsverhandlungen mit der einzigen anerkannten Regierung, d.h. der Regierung der Republik Zypern, zu beginnen.
