After the Second World War the Engelbecken was used to dump rubble from bombed-out buildings, and slowly filled up. After the Wall was built in 1961 the Engelbecken and Luisenstaedtischer Canal were part of the Berlin Wall Death Strip, and were completelely filled with sand, to better show the footprints of fugitives.

Das Engelbecken, das wahrscheinlich nach dem Engel benannt wurde, der auf dem Turm der benachbarten Kirche St. Michael steht, blieb als Wasserbecken bestehen. Nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg wurde auch das Engelbecken mit Kriegsschutt nach und nach zugeschüttet.
