The upward motion comes from air rising over mountains, warm air riding over cooler air (warm front), colder air pushing under warmer air (cold front), convection from local heating of the surface, and other weather and cloud systems. Hence, changes in any of these aspects alter precipitation. As precipitation maps tend to be spotty, overall trends in precipitation are indicated by the Palmer Drought Severity Index (see Figure 1), which is a measure of soil moisture using precipitation and crude estimates of changes in evaporation.

4.4 Interpretation Although sampled with very difTerent degrees of thoroughness, there do appear to have been 5 distinct transport events/pulses/eddies transected over the course of the cruise. The characteristics observed during the Aranda cruise are also evident here. These characteristics include thick, fast overflow layers capped by low-S water (PIW), gradual buildup on the leading edge followed by rapid cutoff on the trailing edge, a downslope velocity component in the bottom layer and an upslope velocity component in the warm water following the cutoff Many (but not all) of the events £dso occur below a layer of cold STirface water indicating an offshore excursion of or detachment fix)m the cold front.

4.4 Interpretation
 Obwohl mit sehr DifTerent Grad Gründlichkeit abgetastet, scheinen es sich
 haben wurden 5 verschiedene transport Veranstaltungen/Impulse/Wirbel transected im Laufe der
 Kreuzfahrt. Während der Kreuzfahrt Aranda beobachteten Merkmale sind auch hier offensichtlich.
 Diese Merkmale sind Dicke, schnelle Überlauf Schichten begrenzt durch niedrig-S Wasser (PIW),
 allmähliche Anhäufung an der Spitze, gefolgt von schnellen Cut-Off auf der Hinterkante, eine
 im Abstieg Probenpeaks Geschwindigkeit Komponente in der unteren Schicht und eine Komponente des Probenextraktes im Anstieg-Geschwindigkeit
 im warmen Wasser nach der Cut-Off viele (aber nicht alle) von den Ereignissen £dso auftreten
 unter einer Schicht von kalten STirface Wasser, ein Offshore-Ausflug oder Loslösung
 Update) m die Kaltfront.
