Today at 13:49, time zone of the southeastern combat zone, Comandante Felipe, of the Clandestine Revolutionary Indigenous Committee (Comité Clandestino Revolucionario Indígena - CCRI ) of the Zapatista Army of National Liberation, inaugurated the First Encounter Between the Zapatistas and the Peoples of the World, with the presence of over one thousand people from 40 countries of the world and approximately 2,000 zapatistas from communities in the tzotzil region.

Am heutigen Tag um 13.49 Uhr, Stunde der Front der südöstlichen Schlacht, eröffnete der Comandante Felipe des Geheimen Revolutionären Indígena-Komitees (CCRI) der Zapatistischen Armee der Nationalen Befreiung das Erste Treffen der Zapatistischen Gemeinden und der Völker der Welt. Dabei waren mehr als 1000 Menschen aus 40 Ländern der Welt und etwa 2000 Mitglieder der zapatistischen Unterstützungsbasis aus dem Gebiet der Tzotziles anwesend.

Both Commissioners Ferrero-Waldner and Michel have already communicated publicly their preoccupation about the consequences of the hostilities on the civilian population and have called on both parties, the LTTE and the Sri Lankan authorities, to protect the civil population, as required under international humanitarian law, and to allow the safe and voluntary movement of people away from the combat zone.

We have demanded that international and national humanitarian organisations, as well as journalists, be granted full and unhindered access to the combat zone and to the refugee camps and we call on the Sri Lankan Government to cooperate with countries and aid organisations that are willing and able to evacuate civilians.
