4.4 Proof of origin: As long ago as the Middle Ages, various apple and pear varieties were widely grown on the mountain farms of the Alto Adige for the use of the family living on the farm itself. From the middle of the 19th century fruit growing became a flourishing commercial activity, with purchasers in Vienna, Innsbruck, Munich, Warsaw and St. Petersburg. This period saw the launching of modern fruit cultivation in the Alto Adige. In 1831 a schoolteacher, Johann Jakob Pöll, published the first manual on fruit growing and in 1872 the newly established San Michele all'Adige Agricultural Institute introduced it as a specific subject in the teaching curriculum. A nursery list of the Bolzano Agricultural Association of 1856 mentions no fewer than 193 varieties of cultivable apple. The most important historical work on fruit and vegetable growing in the Alto Adige of 1894 and 1904 by Karl Mader recognises almost 40 varieties as very widespread in the entire Alto Adige area.

Jahrhunderts wurde der Obstanbau zu einer blühenden Erwerbstätigkeit mit ausländischen Kunden in Wien, Innsbruck, München, Warschau und Sankt Petersburg. Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts beginnt die Modernisierung des Obstanbaus in Südtirol. Im Jahr 1831 veröffentlichte der Volksschullehrer Johann Jakob Pöll ein erstes Obstanbaulehrbuch, und 1872 wurde der Obstanbau als eigenständiges Lehrfach im gerade gegründeten Agrarinstitut Sankt Michael an der Etsch eingeführt. Im Katalog der Bozener Agrarvereinigung von 1856 sind nicht weniger als 193 anbaufähige Obstsorten aufgeführt. Im wichtigsten historischen Werk über den Obst-und Gemüseanbau in Südtirol, das Karl Mader 1894 und 1904 veröffentlichte, werden an die 40 Apfelsorten genannt, die überall in Südtirol verbreitet sind.

The Biqa Valley, with 40 percent of the country's cultivable land, is the most productive agricultural region. It, too, has suffered from war and foreign occupation. By 1987 Syrian troops had been in the Biqa Valley for more than eleven years. During that time, they clashed with Palestinians, Christians, Israelis, and Shias. The 1982 Israeli invasion and the arrival of the Iranian (Pasdaran) Revolutionary Guards also brought economic hardship to the valley.
