2005 has already achieved an unprecedented record, in that 2005 was the year with the highest number of named tropical cyclones since records began.

Mr President, Commissioner, ladies and gentlemen, I would firstly like to remind you that the outermost regions of the EU are located in areas where the inhabitants live in the shadow of cyclones from the Caribbean and violent storms coming in from the oceans, and for this reason we should not be surprised that some natural disasters will take place in these areas from time to time, such as the one which occurred recently in Tenerife in the Canary Islands, where, fortunately, some of us who are Members of Parliament happen to live.

Herr Präsident, Herr Kommissar, meine Damen und Herren!Zunächst möchte ich daran erinnern, dass die Gebiete in äußerster Randlage in Regionen liegen, in denen die Bevölkerung mit karibischen Zyklonen und Ozeanstürmen leben muss.Deshalb dürfen uns manche Naturkatastrophen in diesen Regionen nicht verwundern, wie dies gerade auf Teneriffa geschah, einer Insel der Gruppe der Kanaren, auf denen einige Abgeordnete dieses Parlaments das Glück haben zu leben und die von schweren Regenstürmen heimgesucht wurden.
