Socialist theory knows several forms on democracy. Some examples are social democracy, democratic socialism, and the dictatorship of the proletariat. Within Marxist orthodoxy there is hostility to what is commonly called "liberal democracy", which they refer to as parliamentary democracy because of its often centralized nature. Because of their desire to eliminate the political elitism they see in capitalism, Marxists, Leninists and Trotskyites believe in direct democracy implemented though a system of communes (which are sometimes called soviets and are totally controlled by the communist party).
