Also, polymorphisms in the vitamin D receptor (VDR) may be associated with muscle strength because of the relationship between vitamin D and its known effect on both smooth and striated muscle. Polymorphisms in the VDR have been associated with sarcopenia in elderly men, muscle strength and body composition in premenopausal women, and muscle strength in older women.
