And had We willed We would surely have lifted him thereby, but he clung to the earth and followed his desire, wherefore his case became like unto the case of a dog, who, if thou attackest him, lolleth out his tongue and if thou leavest him alone, lolleth out his tongue. Such is the likeness of the people who belie Our sign; so recount thou the narratives, that haply they may refelect.

Und hätten WIR es gewollt, hätten WIR ihm damit (den Ayat) doch eine hohe Stellung gewährt. Doch er neigte zur Erde (zum Diesseits) und folgte seinen Neigungen. So ähnelt sein Gleichnis dem Gleichnis eines Hundes: "Wenn du ihn verjagst, hechelt er, und wenn du ihn in Ruhe läßt, hechelt er auch." Solcherart ist das Gleichnis von Leuten, die Unsere Ayat ableugneten. So erzähle die (dir offenbarten) Begebenheiten, damit sie sich entsinnen.

So ist es mit ihm wie mit einem Hund: Gehst du auf ihn los, hängt er die Zunge heraus; läßt du ihn in Ruhe, hängt er auch die Zunge heraus. So ist es mit den Leuten, die unsere Zeichen für Lüge erklären. Erzähle also, was es zu erzählen gibt, auf daß sie nachdenken.
