My last point is relation to these capitals of culture is that when we speak about culture we do not just think in highbrow terms of classical orchestras, ballet and music, although of course these should be included, but that we also recognise the ancient cultures and traditions which exist within each of the Member States.

Abschließend möchte ich in diesem Zusammenhang feststellen, dass wir, wenn wir von Kultur sprechen, nicht nur an den anspruchsvollen Kulturbetrieb mit Ballett und klassischer Musik denken, der natürlich einbezogen werden sollte, sondern dass es dabei auch um alte Kulturen und Traditionen geht, die in jedem Mitgliedstaat existieren.
