The pilot study area of 46710 km2 stretches over a length of 258km from Shaoguan city to Sanshui city in the middle and downstream of Beijiang River is shown in Figure 1. The basin has an average annual rainfall of 1707mm, and the annual discharge at Shijiao is 1324m3/s. Three main dams have been built across the river; the Nanshui to store 1249*106 m3, the Changhu to store 149*106m3 and the Feilaixia run-of-river to store 19.04*108 m3. The reservoirs are multi-purpose, for hydropower, recreation, flood control, transportation, and agricultural, industrial and domestic purposes. The middle reach runs through mountainous and lime stone areas between Shaoguan and Qingyuan. Guangzhou city is protected from floods by river dikes below Qingyuan.
