The anal-sadistic phase is Freud's second phase of libidinal development. It is characterised by sensual pleasures related to the function of defecation, both evacuation and retention, and by the child's intense interest in his faeces. Psychologically, this phase has to do with sadistic, destructive impulses as well as urges to take possessive control of one's own body. The so-called "anal character" is a person whose neurosis has developed as a reaction to the erotic and aggressive urges of the anal phase and remained stuck there. His likely characteristics are obduracy, inflexibility, obsessive-compulsive cleanliness, orderliness, avarice or just the opposite. Due to a greater understanding of child development and importance of the interaction between mother and child, the concepts "anal character", "anal-sadistic stage" are less prominent today in analytic psychotherapies than they were and are in psychoanalysis.

Es zeichnet sich durch sinnliche Freuden mit Bezug auf die Funktion des Stuhlgang, Evakuierung und die Archivierung und des Kindes intensives Interesse an seinem Kot. Psychologisch, diese Phase mit sadistischen, destruktive Impulse zu tun hat als auch fordert besitzergreifend Kontrolle über den eigenen Körper übernehmen. 
 Der so genannte "anale Charakter" ist eine Person, deren Neurose entwickelt hat, als eine Reaktion auf das erotische und aggressive der anale Phase fordert und blieb dort stecken. Seine wahrscheinlich Eigenschaften sind Halsstarrigkeit, Inflexibilität, obsessive-compulsive Sauberkeit, Ordentlichkeit, Habgier oder genau das Gegenteil. 
 Durch ein besseres Verständnis der kindlichen Entwicklung und Bedeutung der Interaktion zwischen Mutter und Kind, die Konzepte "anal Charakter" sind "anal-sadistische Phase" weniger prominente heute in analytischen Psychotherapien als sie waren und sind in der Psychoanalyse.
